Orkla drive up fish product packaging standards at Envases’ Seaming School

Metal packaging offers unique conserving properties. They’re the ultimate in food protection and preservation and ideal for protecting against heat and punctures, as well the effects of light, oxygen, and bacteria. But, without effective seaming, a can’s quality can fall well below industry standards. Preserving packaged meats and seafood rely on maintaining a modified atmosphere inside the packaging.

Optimizing production line for fish packaging

Orkla, a leading Norwegian supplier of consumer brands, understood the importance of seaming in their food division. To ensure their manufacturing staff had the skills and knowledge to ensure their canned luncheon meat and fish product packaging were perfectly seamed, Orkla enrolled their Swedish team into Envases' Seaming School.

“We wanted to raise the skills of our staff who are responsible for inspecting the seams on the line, but we also allowed operators and managers to participate,” explained Orkla Quality and Environment Manager Agneta Stenberg. “All staff need to have the same level of skills so that they can communicate with one another. This way, we can maintain consistent quality across our entire production line.”

Quality assurance and training helped Orkla efficiency for fish- and canned meat packaging

Envases’ Seaming School was recommended to Agneta Stenberg by several employees who had previously attended one of Envases' courses. It was crucial that Orkla were able to extend seaming training across their wider teams to drive up quality standards throughout their business, ensuring shelf life and product freshness were maxmised.

“We had informative and engaging discussion about procedures and quality checks. The training itself was extremely practical and covered many examples and exercises that ensured our team retained their new knowledge,” Agneta said. “We aim to send more staff on the course in the future. The quality of training and the value it creates within our business is invaluable.”
