Eliminating “Forever Chemicals”
PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals” due to their persistence, have been used for their low-friction and repellent properties in certain coatings.
As part of the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR),
a very low threshold for PFAS will come into effect in August 2026, effectively mandating their phaseout from food packaging coatings in Europe.
Envases is actively working to remove these substances from our food packaging by finding alternative solutions with similar properties.
Progress and centered collaboration
In our production in Denmark and Sweden, we’ve successfully converted most lacquers to BPA-NI, with only a few still containing BPA, which we are confident will be phased out within the specified timelines.
Germany is particularly advanced, with almost all internal food coatings being BPA-NI.
We are actively centralizing our lacquer specification from our Danish laboratory to streamline this complex process across all European operations.
We are dedicated to continuous innovation, rigorous testing, and strategic investment to phase out substances of concern.
